This year I went to Hyper Japan at Earls Court in July. The weather was truly horrible and hot so my cosplay plans for the weekend were a little ruined. I however decided to go lolita.
Follow the break for more photos and my experience of the weekend!
The hall was changed from the last years Hyper Japan and moved to the other court which I find is a little annoying in the fact it has yellow lighting. It makes most people look a weird colour. There was however more stuff this year so I guess they had to move to a bigger place. I arrived around 10/11ish in the morning and there was already a huge que. Literally was going all around the building and further. When I got there there was also no more tickets being sold so this event has definitely gotten bigger. I don't really get why the que got so big as when I got in the hall wasn't that packed but I suppose they had their reasons. Just a lot of people got iritated standing around in super hot sun.
Eventually I got in and met up with a couple of people I know. We took a look at the food stalls and there was again a large selection of Japanese street food like last time. There was also lots of Japanese street stalls along with Japanese living/food tools and a whole buncha anime stalls. I was again not looking to spend money but did buy a couple of packets of hi-chews and some other sweets that I like. I had just came back from Japan at this point so I was fully merch'd out.
I wasn't fully paying attention to all the panels and shows on offer however I did make sure to see some of the cosplay competitions along with the Shiro-A show. I really liked the show and thought they were a more tron like blue man group. Also some of the costumes this year was very impressive on both the stage and ones I saw in the hall. I also felt a little sorry for all the people wearing costumes with lots of layers in the heat.
Here's some of the costumes I took some photos of:
That's a whole lot of photos.
There was already quite a few Shingeki cosplayers but I can already imagine how many Shingeki cosplayers there will be at MCM. What I like about Hyper Japan is being able to see more current anime costumes. There was also a large amount of lolitas on the day and some really amazing co-ords! Lots of classic and sweet on the day with some gothic. I guess it was too hot for some people to really go full goth that day. It was also interesting that they had an area in the hall that people could pay to be 'dressed up like a lolita' and be given a wig and make over with a bunch of bodyline dresses. I guess it was a nice idea to give people the experience of trying out lolita. There was also an area for people to have photos taken by the Hyper Japan staff with a background to be entered into a competition also. Lots of competitions actually and a lot of things you could sign up for.
Posing with the lolis.
I had a nice day overall but didn't attend the Sunday as I was too tired to attend and I also had to clean up the house for guests coming on the Monday. I picked my outfit based on how hot it was going to be and I was pretty cool for most of the day. Later on I went to a hotel party with some friends and then later when home in the early morning. I think there was lots to do over the weekend but I don't think having it at the peak of the hot weather we had been having was a good idea. As much as some people dislike the cold and wet, November is a more forgiving time for cosplayers and lolitas I think.
